Selling used toys can be an outstanding source of income for any work at home Mom (WAHM) or Dad. Have used toys that your kids have outgrown? Don’t even think about selling them at a yard sale for 10c each. What are you, crazy?! I have made over $50,000 reselling yard sale and thrift store toys on Amazon, eBay and Etsy. Here’s how….
Selling Used Toys on Amazon
Selling used toys and games on Amazon is a nice racket. Very few people know that you can sell these used items on Amazon. The great thing is that often, you cannot sell these items on eBay and make a profit, either. So, the few of us Amazon sellers who know about selling used toys on Amazon are the only ones buying these items to sell.
You can sell almost every modern used toy in decent condition on Amazon, as long as you have either A) a bar code or B) the actual name of the toy (which is often more difficult to figure out than you might think).
Pay attention to the toys aisles while you are at Meijer, K-Mart and Wal-Mart so that you know what toys are titled, and which toys are expensive to buy at stores. Those are the toys that you will look for while at second-hand stores and garage sales.
Even loose action figures, Hot Wheels, Barbie dolls, and other small toys can be sold in used condition. Used toys can often take some time to sell, but you can also get these toys for very cheap. If you have young kids like we do, outgrown toys can become profit makers in your Amazon inventory, especially large outdoor toys and electronic toys.
We have sold many used toys that our boys have outgrown. Kids also learn about the value of keeping toys in good condition. We let our boys sell their own toys to upgrade to new ones, but the toys that are in poor condition or missing pieces… sorry, boys.
Used board games can also be sold fairly effectively on Amazon. Some are worth $50+. In the last couple of years, I have sold four sealed board games found at thrift stores for over $50, including an original Trivial Pursuit for $80 that was sold in two days. The vintage 3M bookshelf games also sell for good profits – usually over $20.
Some other games to look for: electronic board games, vintage versions of classic games, and handheld electronic games. Passive Income for Life ($3) details exactly how to open an Amazon seller account and how to list used items effectively and then package and ship sold items.
Selling Used Toys on eBay
eBay can also be an effective outlet for selling used toys, but competition drives the prices considerably lower for most individual toys, compared to Amazon prices. I only offer modern used toys as fixed price items on eBay.
eBay auctions are good places to sell collectible toys or antique toys – items that have the potential to have significant potential for collector demand. These types of toys can be bid up higher than Amazon value on eBay auctions.
The other nice thing about eBay is that you can almost always sell toys within a week. Sometimes, rare toys can take months to sell on Amazon, or longer. eBay is also a good place to sell groups of toys as lots. Have several electronic games that are not high-value Amazon sellers? Group them and sell them on eBay. Loose action figures, Hot Wheels cars and doll clothes are hot-selling eBay toy lots.
Selling Used Toys and Parts on Etsy
Etsy.com is another location that many sellers do not effectively utilize. Etsy is another location that can be awesome for selling toys in certain situations. Etsy is primarily a location for selling handmade and vintage items. So, it stands to reason that vintage toys can be sold at premium prices on Etsy. I have sold many vintage and collectible toys for much higher prices on Etsy after they went unsold on eBay auctions!
Etsy is also a great place to sell toys or toy parts as craft supplies – you would not believe the prices that you can sell toys and toy parts for on Etsy (remember, these are broken toys and toys with missing parts that you would otherwise toss out!). There are Etsy sellers that have built entire shops around selling toy parts and broken toys for art supplies and they make a living at it. Things like Scrabble tiles and Rummikub pieces are used to make jewelry on Etsy. Old rusty toys and their parts are used to make Steampunk art. Even old toy paperwork and ads are used for scrapbooking and charms.
