How to Sell DVDs: Tips and Guidelines

  • Condition is very important. You can sell DVDs with no cases on Amazon, but in order to get full price, DVDs should have only very light surface wear, and there should be no paperwork inserts missing.
  • It’s hard to make money on many popular DVDs as there were millions sold. Look for rare DVDs.

  • Grab any DVDs that you can find for free. Also save empty cases for replacing broken cases that you may find later.  If you find free DVDs, but the DVDs are badly scratched, save the empty case.
  • DO NOT SELL SCRATCHED DVDs! It’s not worth the couple of dollars in sales to receive a negative feedback, when a customer receives a DVD that will not play in their player.  This is the first thing I tell sellers learning how to sell DVDs.
  • Make sure that you have the supplies and packaging necessary to process you DVDs for resale.  We have a selection of products that we use available by clicking the products at the bottom of the page.
  • Look for the ‘Collector’s Cut’ or ‘Deluxe’ versions of popular movies.  They are worth more than the standard versions.
  • Blu-Ray DVDs are almost always worth more than standard DVDs. Look for premium formats like 3D, LaserDisk.
  • Don’t buy the thin bargain DVDsthat you see at Wal-Mart. They are usually penny DVDs.

How to Sell DVDs:  Where to Find Used DVDs to Sell

The key to making good cash on used DVDs is to get them for free or at a low cost per item.  Look for locations where you can get a large lot of DVDs for cheap, or can buy them for 25 or 50 cents apiece.

Money for Used DVDs at Garage Sales

Garage sales, yard sales, and estate sales can be the best locations to find DVDs at low costs, or for free.  Often, the yard sale host is not the owner of the DVDs, so there is no emotional attachment.

Do not pay more than $1 for any DVDs that you find at garage sales, unless it is still new and sealed.  It is common to find large lots of DVDs for 25c or 50c.

You can usually make an offer that lowers the cost further.  Offer to buy a bunch of DVDs at a lower cost per item, or offer to buy the whole lot.

  • I have made BY FAR the most money on garage sale DVDs by finding them in FREE BOXES.  I have found dozens of them, and I have found $30 DVDs in free boxes.
  • You can also sell DVDs without the cases on Amazon, so pick ANY DVDs (as well as CDs, Cassettes, and video games, for that matter) that you find for free.  If they are penny DVDs on Amazon, you can bundle them later as a large lot on eBay.

Cash for Used DVDs at Thrift Stores

Be careful buying used DVDs from thrift stores like Goodwill.  They often have their DVDs overpriced, and leave re-sellers no room for profit. Many Goodwill stores have their DVDs priced at $2.99 a piece, or higher.   Other thrift stores will have their DVDs priced at $2 or more. Here are some tips to finding quality DVDs to sell at thrift shops:

  • Buy DVDs on their 50% off daysat Goodwill (Colored Stickers indicate 50% off)
  • Know how much the DVDs are worth BEFORE buying them.  Use a smart phone with a bar  code scanner to pre-price DVDs before buying.  This is the ONLY way to know for sure if you will make money on the DVD, when you are talking about s

  • Find the thrift shops that sell DVDs for $1 or less.  Salvation Army stores often sell their DVDs for $1 a piece.  Some smaller thrifts will sell DVDs for under $1.
  • Look for DVDs that are still sealed in original shrink wrap.
  • Look for rare DVDs, and DVDs with small release numbers (not mainstream).

Buying Used DVDs Online: eBay and Craigslist

  • Making consistent money by buying DVD lots on eBay and reselling single DVDs on eBay and Amazon is possible, but it is difficult to make real money doing it.  There are a ton of used DVD sellers that you are competing with for inventory.
  • You are not going to get a large lot of DVDs at a low enough bid price that you can make a lot of money, but you can make some money if you are able to win auctions at a low price.
  • You can find some local deals on Craigslist.  Just be careful about spending too much on lots.  People usually think their DVDs are worth more than what they really are.
